Kazakhstan is actively pursuing new joint ventures in the mining and metals sector with Germany’s Aurubis AG, as discussed in a recent meeting between President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Fritz Vahrenholt, the chairman of Aurubis’ supervisory board. This collaboration aims to enhance Kazakhstan’s industrial capabilities by shifting from a raw-materials-based economy to one that focuses on deeper metal processing and the integration of innovative technologies.
During the meeting, President Tokayev highlighted Germany’s significance as a key economic and technological partner for Kazakhstan in Europe. He underscored the necessity for Kazakhstan’s industrial sector to evolve, particularly in the realm of copper processing, which is a critical area for the country’s economic development. The discussions centred around several priority areas for bilateral cooperation, including the comprehensive processing of complex copper-containing raw materials, the extraction of associated metals, and recycling initiatives.
A notable aspect of the proposed collaboration is the partnership between Kazakhstan’s national company, Tau-Ken Samruk, and Aurubis. This partnership is set to focus on the processing of copper scrap and man-made mineral formations within Kazakhstan, aiming to localize production and enhance the value chain in the copper industry. The parties also deliberated on developing a joint action plan to implement these promising projects effectively.
The meeting reflects Kazakhstan’s broader strategy to modernize its industrial sector and improve its competitiveness in the global market. Earlier discussions between President Tokayev and Siemens Vice President Ulbricht also touched on energy modernization and the digitalization of Kazakhstan’s economy, indicating a comprehensive approach to industrial advancement in the country.
