    Czech Republic Sets Date for Complete Coal Phase-Out and Transition to Nuclear Power

    The Czech Republic has announced plans to completely phase out the use of coal by 2033, as part of its updated national energy plan submitted to the European Commission. By 2040, nuclear power is expected to account for 68% of the country’s electricity generation.

    According to the plan, nuclear power will constitute 44% of the electricity generation mix by 2030, with this figure set to increase to 68% following the commissioning of new reactors. Nuclear energy will form the cornerstone of the country’s energy balance.

    In addition to nuclear power, the Czech Republic will also actively develop renewable energy sources. Natural gas will serve as a transitional energy source to ensure stability in the energy system, complementing the more variable output from renewable sources due to its reliability and efficiency.

    This energy strategy aligns with global targets to reduce carbon emissions and decrease dependence on fossil fuels. Similarly, Ukraine is also pursuing a transition to carbon-free energy, with a focus on nuclear generation as part of its strategy up to 2050.

    Polish Government Backs Rolls-Royce Plan to Build Nuclear Power Plants

    The Polish government has endorsed a proposal by Rolls-Royce to construct nuclear power plants in the country. Rolls-Royce SMR expressed its approval of the announcement by the Polish industrial group, Industria, which will facilitate the approval process for building Rolls-Royce Small Modular Reactor (SMR) power plants in Poland.

    In a statement, Rolls-Royce SMR highlighted that obtaining a Decision in Principle marks the initial step toward deployment. This decision requires input from several government departments. Recently, Polish Minister of Climate and Environment, Paulina Hennig-Kloska, provided the final necessary opinion, confirming that the investment would have a positive impact. This opinion followed endorsements from the Polish Minister of State Assets, the Chief of the Polish Internal Security Agency, and Poland’s Chief Geologist.

    With all required documentation now in place, the Polish Minister of Climate and Environment can issue a Decision in Principle to proceed with the deployment of Rolls-Royce SMRs in Poland. Minister Hennig-Kloska emphasized that this investment is in the public interest and aligns with Poland’s energy and climate policies, a sentiment echoed by other supporting government agencies.

    This decision enables Rolls-Royce to advance its commercial and technical discussions on deploying its SMR power plants in Poland. Each self-contained, factory-built unit is capable of providing low-carbon energy to a million homes for over 60 years.

    Alan Woods, Director of Strategy and Business Development at Rolls-Royce SMR, welcomed the government’s conclusion. He stated, “We are delighted the Polish Government has concluded that the deployment of our unique ‘factory-built’ nuclear power plants would have a positive impact for the country, and we look forward to a Decision in Principle to deploy Rolls-Royce SMRs in Poland.”

    Rolls-Royce SMR is also on track to complete Step 2 of the Generic Design Assessment by the UK nuclear industry’s independent regulators this summer, further solidifying its position as a leader in the European nuclear sector.

    Kazatomprom: Nuclear Power Demand Surges Amid Geopolitical Uncertainty

    Kazatomprom’s CEO, Meirzhan Yussupov, highlighted a significant surge in the demand for nuclear power amidst geopolitical tensions in 2023. Yussupov stated that despite the challenges, the demand for nuclear energy, being a stable and low-carbon source, notably increased. With Kazakhstan contributing around 40% of the global uranium production annually, Yussupov proudly mentioned that approximately every third nuclear reactor worldwide is powered by Kazakh uranium.

    The company emphasized its role in the energy security agenda amidst ongoing global geopolitical uncertainties. Operating in an ESG-compliant and low-risk jurisdiction, Kazatomprom positions itself as a reliable supplier of natural uranium, ready to cater to utilities’ needs in diversifying their supply sources.

    Addressing the impacts of international sanctions, Kazatomprom reiterated its commitment to assessing and monitoring sanctions risks continuously. The company has developed action plans to mitigate negative impacts on its activities, adapting them to evolving risks and updates.

    Regarding financial resilience amid geopolitical tensions, Kazatomprom stated that events in Ukraine have not affected its financial position significantly. Majority of its revenues are in US dollars, providing a natural hedge against currency risks.

    The company has taken cautious steps regarding operations involving Russian banks under active international sanctions processes. Additionally, it continues to assess risks associated with its contracts, such as uranium processing with entities in the Russian Federation.

    Despite potential challenges in transportation due to sanctions, Kazatomprom assures uninterrupted supply to end customers, thanks to continuous monitoring and the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route.

    Regarding proposed US legislation on Russian enriched uranium imports, Kazatomprom clarified that it wouldn’t impact its primary business of natural uranium production.

    The company reported a significant revenue increase in 2023, attributed to higher average realized prices, increased sales volumes, and revenue growth from fuel assembly and rare metal products segments.

    Looking ahead, Kazatomprom expects uranium production volumes for 2024 to remain consistent, but acknowledges uncertainties due to construction delays at new sites, which may affect operating performance.
