In a significant move to bolster economic relations, the European Union has enacted Regulation (EU) 2026/2269, allowing the import of certain goods from Armenia, including ferroalloys, duty-free. This regulation, which came into effect on 9 October 2026, is the result of collaborative efforts between the Armenian Mining and Metallurgy Association (AMMA) and the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Armenia, aimed at addressing the urgent economic situation in the country.
The regulation, published in the Official Journal of the European Union, is set to remain in force for two years. It underscores the EU’s commitment to enhancing trade flows with Armenia by eliminating ad valorem import duties on products of Armenian origin listed in Annex I of the regulation. This initiative is expected to significantly benefit the Armenian mining sector, particularly in the ferroalloys market, which is crucial for various industrial applications.
By facilitating duty-free access to the EU market, Armenia aims to strengthen its economic ties with Europe, fostering a more integrated and cooperative trading environment. The inclusion of ferroalloys in the list of products eligible for duty-free importation is particularly noteworthy, as these materials play a vital role in the production of steel and other alloys, which are essential for numerous industries.
The AMMA has expressed optimism regarding the regulation, viewing it as a pivotal step towards enhancing Armenia’s competitiveness in the global market. The association believes that this development will not only support local producers but also attract foreign investment in the Armenian mining sector, thereby contributing to the overall economic growth of the country.
As the EU continues to explore avenues for strengthening its economic partnerships with neighbouring countries, this regulation marks a significant milestone in the EU-Armenia trade relationship, paving the way for future collaborations in the mining and metallurgy sectors.
