    Kazakhmys to Invest Over KZT 20 Billion in Ulytau Region Development

    Kazakhmys Corporation will invest more than 20 billion tenge in social and infrastructure projects in Kazakhstan’s Ulytau region under a newly signed memorandum of cooperation with the regional akimat.

    The agreement prioritises investments in healthcare, education, infrastructure modernisation and urban development.

    Among the flagship initiatives is the establishment of Ulytau University, as well as the launch of Zhezkazgan’s largest mosque, a trauma care centre in Satpayev and the Namys sports complex with a 150-bed boarding facility.

    Urban improvement projects in Zhezkazgan will include the redevelopment of Zhasar Park, the Gharishkerler Boulevard and the embankment of the Kengir Reservoir. Renovation of the S. Kozhamkulov Theatre is also planned.

    A separate focus of the programme will be the modernisation of water supply, heating and energy infrastructure systems across the region.

    A memorandum of cooperation and interaction between the Ulytau Regional Akimat and Kazcink LLP was signed today, marking a significant step towards supporting the economic development of the Ulytau region and implementing social and infrastructure projects. During the signing ceremony, the regional akim and Kazcink leadership emphasized that this partnership would make a substantial contribution to the sustainable development of the region.

    According to the memorandum, Kazcink LLP will finance 10 social projects in the Zhayrem settlement of Ulytau region this year. These initiatives will focus on healthcare, sports, infrastructure, and improving social facilities.

    Notable plans for 2025 include the construction of a sports complex, installation of external engineering networks, and landscaping within a 60-apartment residential complex project. Additionally, the company will provide coal for heating plants and residential houses. The purchase of 20 apartments for public sector workers, including doctors and teachers, is also planned.

    It is important to note that the partnership between the Ulytau regional akimat and Kazcink began in November 2022. Since then, numerous projects have been implemented that have positively impacted the region’s development and improved the quality of life for its residents.

    New Precious Metal Deposit to Be Developed in Ulytau Region

    In Kazakhstan’s Ulytau Region, a new precious metal deposit will be developed as part of the Symtas Project. The mining company Komkon LLP has submitted a mining plan for the project on Kazakhstan’s Unified Environmental Portal. Komkon has been conducting geological exploration in the Baikonyr area of Ulytau since 1998, with the deposit’s reserves officially placed on record in 2020.

    The Symtas deposit holds reserves of 98.6 thousand tons of ore and 524.75 kg of gold, with an average content of 5.32 g/t (C1 category). Two areas, Mizernoye and Zapadnoye, have been identified as promising for further development. The project will feature two open pits, with Mizernoye extracting two ore bodies and Zapadnoye working with three. The project will also include a shared waste dump, an ore stockpile, a transport department, and supporting infrastructure, such as a field camp and repair services.

    Komkon plans to extract gold over the next three years, with the project expected to break even in 2.3 years. The company has already signed a contract with Kazakhmys Smelting LLP for the supply of gold-bearing flux, which will be processed at the Zhezkazgan copper smelter. In 2017, a semi-industrial trial of Symtas ore demonstrated the feasibility of its use as flux, achieving a 92.07% recovery rate.

    The construction of a geological cluster in the Ulytau Region is progressing steadily, with completion expected in the third quarter of 2024, according to the Ministry of Industry of Kazakhstan. The complex, valued at 7 billion tenge, is being built on the former site of the Zhezkazgangeology exploration company, covering an area of over 14,000 square meters.

    Currently, the majority of construction work has been completed. The site is now undergoing the installation of engineering networks, the construction of communal infrastructure, and the finishing of premises.

    The cluster will feature the first geophysical laboratory in the country, developed with assistance from specialists at the Colorado School of Mines. Additionally, the complex will house an ALS analytical laboratory, a geological museum, a training center, a repair and mechanical workshop, a library with specialized literature for geologists, an office building, and employee dormitories. Among the planned facilities is a core storage facility with a capacity of over 200,000 linear meters of samples.

    The new complex aims to attract specialists from across the country to the Ulytau Region, consolidating the mining sector’s human and technical resources. Once operational, it will create 150 jobs.

    Plans to establish a complex for precious metals and polymetals in the Ulytau region have been revealed by regional authorities. The project, expected to launch in 2026, aims to produce 0.72 tons of Dore alloy, 10.8 thousand tons of lead concentrate, and 4.3 thousand tons of zinc concentrate, according to information provided by the authorities. Projects defining water protection zones and strips along the river within the planned mining area, as well as mining work plans, have been developed, as stated by the government agency. The estimated cost of opening the complex is 3.57 billion tenge, with efforts underway to obtain a mining license. Once operational, the facility aims to employ 140 people.

Furthermore, an allocation of over 11 billion tenge has been earmarked for geological undertakings in the Zhezkazgan region from 2022 to 2025, with the primary aim of augmenting the mineral reserves. Presently, geological exploration is being conducted in 19 areas of the Ulytau region, entrusted to the capable hands of regional geologists.

    The forthcoming geological complex is poised to bestow not only upon the Ulytau region but upon the entirety of Kazakhstan a multitude of benefits, as it stands as the nation’s inaugural and momentous geological cluster. The construction endeavors are anticipated to culminate in the first quarter of the current year, effectively generating 150 employment opportunities. The region, with its abundance of valuable minerals, particularly copper, will be further empowered through the establishment of this center. This newfound hub will undoubtedly contribute to the advancement and application of novel scientific methodologies, as astutely emphasized by Berik Abdygaliuly, the esteemed Akim of the Ulytau region.

    The successful realization of this pioneering project holds the promise of fostering positive progress in the development of the Kabanbai Batyr microdistrict. With the steadfast support of investors, both significant and minor concerns are already being diligently addressed. Notably, in this small town, which boasts a population of over 1,000 residents, a substantial proportion of households are now connected to the invaluable resource of natural gas. Additionally, the construction of a contemporary educational institution under the auspices of the ‘Comfortable School’ program has recently commenced, heralding a new era of educational excellence.

The extraction of these valuable resources necessitates the utilization of cutting-edge scientific technologies.
