    Mkango Resources Completes Acquisition of Remloy Rare Earth Magnet Recycling Business

    Mkango Resources Ltd. has successfully finalised its acquisition of the Remloy rare earth magnet recycling business from Heraeus Amloy Technologies GmbH for €8 million (approximately US$9.3 million). This transaction, which was first announced on 20 May 2026, includes an initial payment of €5 million (around US$5.8 million) upon closing, with the remaining €3 million (approximately US$3.5 million) due on 28 August 2028, marking the second anniversary of the deal’s completion.

    Remloy operates a recycling facility in Bitterfeld, Germany, which employs a melting process to recycle end-of-life rare earth magnets. This process produces neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) alloy powders, catering to the bonded and hot-deformed magnet markets. The Remloy recycling method complements the short loop recycling process of HyProMag, which focuses on producing sintered magnets, and Mkango Rare Earths UK’s long loop recycling process aimed at generating mixed rare earth carbonates and oxides. The facility aims for a production capacity of at least 500 tonnes of NdFeB alloy powder annually.

    The acquisition comes with several advantages, including a fully commissioned production facility bolstered by substantial investments in equipment and feedstock. At the time of completion, Remloy had a significant stockpile of approximately 345 tonnes of end-of-life rare earth magnets and alloys, which will provide essential feedstock for both Remloy and HyProMag, supporting their growth strategies and creating future trading opportunities.

    Mkango’s CEO, William Dawes, expressed optimism about the acquisition, highlighting the potential to enhance the rare earth supply chain and recycling ecosystem in Germany and surrounding regions. He noted that Mkango is now strategically positioned across the entire rare earth supply chain in Europe and North America, with operations spanning recycling, magnet and alloy manufacturing in the UK, Germany, and the USA, as well as rare earth separation in Poland and mining activities in Malawi.

    David Bender, the newly appointed Managing Director of Remloy, emphasised the company’s readiness to scale up production and recycling capacities for rare-earth magnets. He believes that the integration into Mkango will significantly bolster supply chain resilience and security of supply in Europe, allowing Remloy to better serve its customers through enhanced synergies within the Mkango Group.

    Mkango Resources has officially opened a rare earth magnet recycling facility in Pforzheim, Germany, operated by its subsidiary HyProMag GmbH, marking a concrete step toward building European domestic capacity in a supply chain currently dominated by China.

    The plant uses Hydrogen Processing of Magnet Scrap technology — developed at the University of Birmingham — to recycle neodymium-iron-boron magnets, the permanent magnets used in electric vehicle motors and wind turbines. The facility carries backing from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy and featured in the recently signed UK-Germany agreement on critical raw materials, underlining its relevance to both national industrial policy and broader allied supply chain strategy.

    Initial capacity stands at 100 tonnes per year, with a medium-term target of 350 tonnes and a fully permitted ceiling of 750 tonnes annually. The phased ramp-up allows Mkango to grow output without requiring heavy upfront capital deployment, while commissioning is already underway with early processing runs of the core unit completed.

    The plant’s strategic significance exceeds its current output. Europe has been working to reduce dependence on imported rare earths — particularly from China, which dominates both primary production and processing — and magnet recycling offers a lower-carbon and lower-cost alternative to primary mining as a route to domestic supply. Neodymium-iron-boron magnets are among the most critical materials in the energy transition, and recovering them from end-of-life products addresses both supply security and circular economy objectives simultaneously.

    Mkango Resources Ltd has announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, Mkango Polska Sp. Z.o.o, has signed a revised exclusive land lease agreement with Grupa Azoty Pulawy for the development of a strategic rare earths separation plant in Poland. This agreement builds on their collaboration that began in 2021.

    The agreement covers an 8-hectare site adjacent to Grupa Azoty Pulawy’s fertilizer and chemicals complex in Pulawy, Poland. The location offers strong infrastructure, access to essential reagents and utilities, and significant expansion potential. Situated within a Polish Special Economic Zone, the site ensures direct access to European and global markets.

    The planned rare earths separation plant aims to enhance Europe’s supply chain security for critical materials used in electric vehicles, wind turbines, and green technologies. The project aligns with EU regulations on critical raw materials, supporting sustainable and diversified supply chains.

    Alexander Lemon, President of Mkango, expressed enthusiasm about the deal, emphasizing its role in facilitating the plant’s expansion and development. He highlighted Mkango’s strong partnership with Grupa Azoty and the upcoming definitive feasibility study leading to construction.

    Hubert Kamola, Vice-President of Grupa Azoty S.A, described the project as innovative, bringing job creation, technology transfer, and supply chain development for Europe and North America. He noted the synergies between both companies, including land availability, utilities, and chemical expertise.

    Mkango Resources continues its strategic expansion in the rare earths sector, leveraging its ownership in Maginito Limited to become a leader in rare earth magnet recycling and sustainable materials production. The company also holds an extensive exploration portfolio in Malawi and is progressing with the Songwe Hill rare earths project. Additionally, Mkango is pursuing a NASDAQ listing through a SPAC merger with Crown PropTech Acquisitions.
