A delegation led by Marcin Sypniewski, a Member of the European Parliament, recently visited Rwanda to assess the country’s mining and mineral-processing sector, specifically focusing on LuNa Smelter and Mbogo Mine. This visit highlights the significant Polish investment in Rwanda, which aims to enhance local value addition and promote responsible mineral production. The delegation included key figures from the European Parliament and Africee Group Limited, showcasing a collaborative effort to strengthen economic ties between Poland and Rwanda.
At Mbogo Mine, the delegation observed the extraction of cassiterite, a key mineral, and learned about the responsible mining practices employed at the site. Following this, they toured LuNa Smelter, where cassiterite is refined into high-purity tin. This integrated mine-to-metal model exemplifies the importance of traceability and responsible sourcing in the mining industry, demonstrating how investments can extend beyond mere extraction to include mineral processing.
Sustainability and the circular economy are central to LuNa’s operations. The mine is actively repurposing mining tailings into construction materials, while the smelter is committed to achieving a zero-waste production model. This approach maximises resource recovery and maintains a low carbon footprint, aligning with global sustainability goals.
The delegation also discussed LuNa’s expansion projects, which aim to enhance processing capacity and efficiency, thereby increasing the value derived from Rwanda’s mineral resources. Such visits are crucial for providing international visibility to Rwanda’s mining sector, allowing policymakers and investors to witness the progress and opportunities available for investment in sustainable critical-mineral supply chains.
LuNa Smelter’s role as a Polish investment in Rwanda underscores the potential for strengthening economic cooperation between the two nations. The hope is that this partnership will pave the way for increased investment, technology exchange, and industrial collaboration within the global critical-minerals value chain, further enhancing Rwanda’s position in the mining industry.
