How many gold bars did Kazakhstanis buy in 2022

According to the National Bank of Kazakhstan, in 2022, second-tier banks and individual non-bank exchange offices sold 37,940 gold bars with a total weight of 1.1 tons. The program for the sale and repurchase of these gold bars for the population was launched by the National Bank in 2017, and since then, a total of 112,845 gold bars with a total weight of 3.8 tons have been sold. The most popular weight among buyers in 2022 was 5 grams, making up 30.5% of total sales. Additionally, 20-gram and 10-gram bars were also popular, making up 23% and 22.5% of sales respectively. The cities of Almaty, Astana, and Karaganda had the most demand for gold bars, which are considered reliable investment tools. The National Bank also reported that 7,703 gold bars were repurchased in 2022, with a total weight of 201.4 kg. These bars were mostly sold to the population without returning them to the branches of the National Bank.
